I have been making mosaics from wallpaper sample books. I take several pages of coordinated papers and cut them into 1" squares. Then I sort the squares by the main colors and their relative placement on the squares. Finally I draw a 1" grid on stretched watercolor paper and draw an outline of the object I want to depict.
Beginning with the solid places I lay on squares of mostly solid colors. At the edges I find pieces where the color is placed on the squares to match the outline I have drawn.
When the entire layout is done, I use matte acrylic medium to both adhere the squares and seal them, working one square at a time. The finished works are matted and framed.
Here are some mosaics I have created.
