NIGHT DANCER
© 7/16/93 On task to lock up for the night - attention diverted by a sliver of light underneath one door, he crosses to it. Listening, hears the sound of leather slippers tapping on the wooden floor. About to call out "Are you finished here?" he slips inside and mesmerized watches the silent figure glide. He slides against the wall, haunches - catching breath on leaps, he watches. She hears him not but only feels the music in her mind and heels - dancing with abandon on the spreading floor. Crescendo and the dancing ends. His eyes a silent message sends "I love you, dancing daughter." She hears the message with her heart and turns to see him watching her. "Daddy, must I go to bed now - may I dance just one more hour?" Wishing for a dozen roses to lay upon his daughter's arms he only sighs and rises - "Sleep now daughter, rest and dream of dancing - so shall I." |

THE DANCE PROGRESSION
© 7/25/93 The graceful hand begins the dance with music from our souls. Our pretty foot on floor we put; the music swells and grows. We leap, we bend, the rhythm sends the music to your eyes. We pointe, plie, we move and sway. The music ends and sighs. And here at last the dance is past; the dancers in repose until again the music sends a dance into our souls. |

FRED OF MY HEART
© 10/1/93 I'm head-over-heart in love with you... just as you are, just as you do. My head wants to list all the reasons why. My heart doesn't care. "so why even try"? Suffice it to say you're dear to me, and by head or by heart you always will be. |

WAITING FOR WORD
For RaChelle on her way to Australia © 8/16/94 Waiting for your call - it's hard to know if you're OK. What if someone snatched you from the airport in LA. Imagination has a way to magnify the hours into days and weeks and months when worrying is ours. "Please call, and quickly too!" my mind and heart call out. I need to know that all is well, no mischief is about. I think that I will be OK when once the call is done and mother's fears are laid to rest - well, maybe just this one! |

A MOTHER'S BLESSING
For RaChelle's Wedding © 5/15/96 As the pastor gives his blessing I add mine Did God show me, just for you, he sent this man? Was his coming not a gift of the divine, An answer to my prayer? And then he asked your hand. Now you start your life of days in work and play Three, with God, forever joined in love. And I find again that I am called to pray. In answer to my prayer; May you please the Lord above. I do not ask for you a life of ease For in need you'll turn t'ward one another And in sharing, one another please. God grant me now my prayer The blessings of your mother. |

FOR JERRY AND JUDY
© 2/28/97 When two such meet and hearts reach out T'ward one another, there's no doubt. Comparing hopes and dreams with care You find your lives were meant to share. As moments turn to years and more, And you discover what's in store; Accept with joy, without an end, God's gift of love, a mate, a friend. |

HOW GOES THE DAY © 3/4/97 The birthing of a day is robed in aspirations; awak'ng to new dreams bright with hope and promise. Ambitious of the conquest of its full potential; making plans to conquer everything before it. The dying of a day wears shrouds of lamentation; sighing in regret it wears remorse and sorrow. Despairing of the failures, losses and deceptions; but hoping still to conquer everything tomorrow. |

MOM'S ATTIC TREASURES
© Mother's Day 1997 Mom, I'm cleaning out the attic where you saved your souvenirs; and I'm finding, stored, the treasures that you kept throughout the years. I find baby books and dresses. Here are letters, photographs. There are toys that I remember were the source of many laughs. Wait a minute, something's missing from the mem'rys neatly stored. Its that nowhere am I finding Old momentos of the Lord. Thank you, Mom for always using all the faith from God you had. Thanks for showing me His grace in the times both good and bad. Thank you, too, for prayers unending which you added to your love; that you cared enough to lift us to the Father's throne above. As I'm sorting earthly treasures that you stored upon the shelf; I'm so thankful that you daily kept God's Spirit in yourself. |

AT A LOSS
© 9/23/97 Grief is thick poured out upon my heavy heart weighing me further down and down till I just sit and stare. "not real" I cry, almost convinced myself, until another wave strikes and pulls me down again. I do not want to sink beneath this sea of tears- and sometimes hope will hold me up awhile. But I am crushed by waves of misery, where grief has come to almost bury me. |

WORD GAMES
© 9/26/97 1 Onomatopoeia means the `crackle' and the `crunch' sound the same if you should say them or you make them with your lunch. 2 It isn't a crime if a poem doesn't rhyme. 3 A diphthong is not worn for wading in water nor is it a dish from Japan or Hong Kong. It's vowel sounds that ooze into one other when in one short syllable they roll off the tongue. 4 There's homonyms and synonyms and antonyms galore but I cannot remember which is which now anymore! If bears walk in bear feet (or should that be bare?) or if my Aunt has ants why should anyone care? I've bawled and I've scratched my head till I'm bald. But I still don't know by what fancy word that is called! 5 Alliteration is a little like listening to drops of rain dancing and glistening. 6 Brash and crashing the harsh sounds bang. Cacophony never whispers. 7 I can write hyperbole better than anyone! 8 You said my rhymes were stiff as a tree. Is that metaphor or imagery, or maybe it was simile? It's really got the best of me. |

WHAT DO YOU THINK?
© 10/24/97 I'm worried what you think of me. What would you think if you should see what is inside this mind of mine? Not that I'm thinking all the time! I'm worried you would think me mean for thinking someone isn't clean enough to matter. Oh, would you not judge what I think or do? Granted I am fully blessed by having friends and peace and rest, I only wish somehow to find your thinking brings me peace of mind. |

IN RETROSPECT
© 6/20/00 How does one ever sum up 50 years, With all of the joys and, yes, a few tears? Finding that ‘someone’ only begins The process of loving that 50 years brings. ‘Getting to know you’, that’s how it starts, Then learning to love takes over your hearts. Everyone’s faults come right to the fore, Raising the stress just a little bit more. “Once we are married it will all be okay,” You say to yourselves on your wedding day. But then there are jobs, and also the bills Tight little budgets with room for no frills. It’s “How can you not like my favorite food?” And “Whoever told you that ‘liver’ was good?” Division of labor: “You take out the trash.” “I’ll clean up the kitchen, without being asked.” Kids come along in only a while, And you have to work out your parenting style. “Are we going to spank or will we only scold, Whenever our kids don’t do what they’re told?” The older girl likes to do ‘girly’ stuff, The little boy, boy, he’s all boy, sure enough! It’s that kid in the middle that cannot decide, “Shall I play in the mud, or do drawing inside?” Oftentimes just moving one town down the line, Would stress family life, but we moved all the time. Nobody freaked out, nobody got vexed, As we waited to see where we would live next. Vacations were great, by road or by rail, “Pack up in a hurry, we’re hitting the trail.” Off to Montana, to Emmett, or ocean, Grab sunglasses, sunbonnets, and your suntan lotion. Three teens at one time kept them on their toes, Till one at a time they watched them all go. Leaving to start out on lives of their own, Seems time passes quickly, so soon they are grown. Then grandkids, retirement, and moving again, Building a new house, and making new friends. Today looking back we can hear them both say, “It’s been a wonderful trip to our Golden Day.” |

IN DADDY'S ARMS
© 3/24/01 “Hold me up, Daddy,” a little boy cries when he can’t see the view and Daddy’s so high. “Pick me up, Daddy,” when he’s skinned a knee or things just get scary when he tries to sleep. But he grows a little and no longer naps, so he’s sure he also outgrew Daddy’s lap. On come the years and trials weigh him down. Though he toughs it out his heart wears a frown. His strength slowly wanes - he must realize he’s still very small but that not in size. Too tired to walk from the valley so low - unable to heal the hurts that he knows - Then he remembers his father’s great love and new hope arises - the man looks above. He raises his hands - cries out from his knees to God up in heaven, “Daddy, carry me, please.” |

THE GIFT OF ART
© 10/25/00 The artist here among us is anyone who strives to create a thing of beauty as viewed through their own eyes, or passes on their sorrows, pain or great despair with images or words or sounds designed to let us share. And also it's the artist who tries to lift a spirit by making art encourage one when one should see or hear it. I thank you artists, every one, for giving us your art when doing so requires you to share with us your heart. |

BEING STILL
© 10/10/04 Still, still, my Lord I’ll be still, to hear from your voice the word you would give. That word for today may be ‘grace’, ‘trust’ or ‘peace’ but only you know the word that I need. As I go through the day my life is so loud I’ve learned that I must break away. For the only way I can hear when you speak to my heart is to be very still. So now Lord, I wait for you, being still, still,. |
HAPPY FACE
For Christian © 05/28/06 I never knew anyone who had so much fun Finding humor each day as my little grandson. You, little guy, are a laugh every minute. There isn’t a day without hilarity in it. You chuckle and chortle, guffaw and snort. With snickers and grins you show cheer of all sorts. You’re happy and smiley. With cackles apace You truly have joy and it shows on your face. Such sharing of cheer is God’s gift to you, So you keep right on giggling every day through. |
